Project of the Month

Royal Caribbean Casino Photo Shoot

This month, Royal Caribbean International will kick off on a new print ad campaign featuring casino photography from DMS photographer Sean Deren. In June, DMS associates Vince Mann, Robert Kildoo, Lance Robson and Brian Satchfield joined Sean to take over the Casino Royale gaming floor aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas to produce a lifestyle photo shoot. The images will be used in RCI advertisements in casino industry publications. Click here to see sample images from the shoot and click here to see the guys in action.

Tech Tip

Defining Megapixels

Megapixels are commonly used to describe the image size a digital camera can capture. Simply put, a megapixel is one million pixels. An image that is  one thousand pixels wide by one thousand pixels high contains one million total pixels (1,000 X 1,000) and is said to be a 1.0 megapixel image. Consumer digital cameras typically capture images containing 3 to 10 megapixels or so.

The impressive Phase One P65+ uses a huge 60.5 megapixel image sensor which is 8,984 pixels wide by 6,732 pixels high. An image this size printed at 300 dpi would measure 30 inches by 22.5 inches. That makes for a pretty large family photo. To see that same image on a 72 dpi computer monitor would require a screen over ten feet wide!

Interestingly, the current maximum image size of   U.S. high definition television (HDTV) is 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels, which is barely over 2 megapixels. But, multiply that by 30 frames-per-second for video and you’re seeing 62.2 megapixels every second!

By the way, pixel is short for picture element.
